Problems with discs are often thought to be the cause of back pain, and MRI’s are tests that show discs in more detail than, for example, an X-Ray. Unfortunately though, discs are not the only cause of back pain, and therefore, an MRI will not necessarily provide a complete answer as to the reason for your pain. In fact, a landmark study published in 1994 studied 98 people who had no back pain whatsoever, and found that after having MRI’s, only 36% were found to have normal discs. The rest had either disc bulges, protrusions (or herniations) of the disc, leading to question the discs involvement with back pain at all.
An overlooked cause of back pain is often misaligned pelvic bones, overly tight muscles/fascia, and poor posture, none of which show up on an MRI, and can be diagnosed and treated by a therapist who specializes in myofascial release.
