Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is defined as pressure to the median nerve at a tunnel in the wrist, known as the carpal tunnel. Pressure here affects the nerve’s function, creating symptoms in the thumb, first, second, and part of the ring finger. Often times surgery is suggested to cut the carpal tunnel, relieving the pressure, however, it does not always provide relief. The median nerve is a tributary of the nerves that exit the cervical spine, and, the nerve can succumb to pressure anywhere along it’s path from the neck to the wrist. Postural abnormalities, excessive muscle/fascial tightness, disc bulges/herniations, can ultimately produce the same pressure, mimicking the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. An experienced physical therapist who specializes in Myofascial Release is trained to find these dysfunctions, and treat the underlying pressure causing similar symptoms.
