May Your Shoulder Pain be Coming From Someplace Else?

The levator scapula is a muscle that connects your shoulder blade to your neck. Problems with this muscle will alter the way your shoulder blade moves, impacting the harmony of motion that exists between your shoulder blade and humerus, which together comprise your shoulder joint. Shoulder tendinitis or impingement often occurs as a result, creating pain in your shoulder. The diagnosis of tendinitis/impingement would quite possibly show up on MRI’s or X-Rays too, misleading the clinician to the real cause of your problem, the levator scapula. Interestingly, nothing about the levator scapula will show up on these tests.

A myofascial release practitioner is trained to look for the underlying problem, the levator scapula in this case.
