A heel spur is a bony growth that develops around the heel bone. Revealed through an X-Ray, the condition is often treated with medications, injections and sometimes surgery. What often goes overlooked however, are other treatment approaches. A heel spur is frequently caused by tightness in the plantar fascia or calf muscle, which pulls on the heel bone causing a projection to form from the bone (often seen on X-Ray as a spur). In these instances, the remedy involves decreasing the tightness found in the calf or the bottom of the foot, which requires hands on intervention. In some cases, tight structures higher up in the leg can also influence the calf and foot, including the back. A myofascial release trained physical therapist is especially equipped in evaluating and treating these areas when treating someone with a heel spur diagnosis.
